Embracing the Outdoors in Cuyuna Lakes This Fall: Top Activities for All Ages

Fall is one of the best times to visit Cuyuna Lakes. The air is crisp, the leaves turn brilliant shades of red and orange, and there’s no shortage of activities to enjoy. Whether you’re here for a peaceful escape or some family-friendly fun, Cuyuna Lakes has you covered. Here’s your guide to the best outdoor activities in the area this fall.

  1. Hike Through Fall Foliage
Fall colors are in full swing at Cuyuna Lakes, making it the perfect time to hit the trails. The Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area is filled with vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows, and it has trails for every level. Don’t miss the Pennington Overlook for a panoramic view of the lake and forest bathed in fall hues, or take a peaceful walk along Portsmouth Mine Pit Lake to see the colors reflected in the water.

Pro Tip: Bring a camera to capture the fall scenery, and dress in layers—it can be chilly in the morning but warms up as you hike.
  2. Family-Friendly Fall Fun at Local Farms
No fall adventure is complete without a visit to a pumpkin patch or apple orchard, and Cuyuna Lakes has a few charming local farms nearby. Pick your own pumpkins, navigate a corn maze, or sip on fresh apple cider. It’s a fun way for families to experience the season and make some fall memories.

Pro Tip: Go early in the season for the best selection of pumpkins, and don’t forget to grab some farm-fresh goodies like apple cider donuts to take back with you!
  3. Enjoy Fall Fishing and Boating
The lakes around Cuyuna offer excellent fishing as temperatures cool, with bass, walleye, and northern pike all active this time of year. Spend a relaxing day fishing from a boat or the shore, enjoying the quiet that comes with fall on the lake. If you’re not into fishing, renting a canoe or kayak is also a great way to take in the scenery.

Pro Tip: For a quieter spot, try Louisa Mine Lake or Yawkey Mine Lake. And a thermos of hot coffee or cider goes a long way in keeping you warm!
  4. Scenic Picnic Spots and Perfect Fall Photos
Cuyuna Lakes has several ideal picnic spots where you can relax and enjoy the fall scenery. Crosby Memorial Park is a local favorite, with beautiful lake views and a peaceful atmosphere, perfect for an afternoon picnic. If you’re looking for a more secluded spot, Alstead Mine Lake offers a quiet place to take in the colors and snap a few photos.

Pro Tip: Bring a cozy blanket, some warm drinks, and your favorite snacks to make it a perfect fall picnic. These spots are also fantastic for family photos or landscape shots.
  5. Wildlife Watching and Birding
Fall is a great time for wildlife watching in Cuyuna Lakes. With the cooler weather, animals are more active, and it’s a prime time for birdwatching. Keep an eye out for deer, squirrels, and migratory birds like hawks, woodpeckers, and even the occasional bald eagle. A pair of binoculars will make spotting wildlife even easier.

Pro Tip: Mornings and late afternoons are the best times to catch a glimpse of wildlife, so plan accordingly for a better chance of spotting something special.

Tips for Staying Comfortable Outdoors

Fall weather in Minnesota can change quickly, so here are a few tips to keep comfortable while you’re out exploring:

  • Dress in Layers: Start with a moisture-wicking base layer, add a fleece or sweater, and bring a jacket. You’ll appreciate having options as the temperature shifts.
  • Bring a Thermos of Something Warm: Hot cocoa, cider, or coffee can make your outing even cozier.
  • Stay Hydrated: It’s easy to forget to drink water when it’s cool out, but staying hydrated is still essential.
  • Pack for Anything: Fall can bring unexpected rain, so a small backpack with a rain jacket and snacks is a smart addition.

Conclusion

Cuyuna Lakes is a fall paradise, with activities for everyone from outdoor adventurers to families. With hiking trails, scenic lakes, local farms, and quiet spots to relax, you can enjoy all the best of autumn in one beautiful area.
