The Magic of Early Mornings in Cuyuna Lakes: Winter Edition

There’s something truly special about waking up early in Cuyuna Lakes during winter. The crisp air, the stillness of the snow-covered landscape, and the soft colors of sunrise make it a magical experience. Whether you’re looking to soak in a peaceful moment, catch glimpses of local wildlife, or set off on an early morning adventure, here’s why mornings in Cuyuna Lakes are worth waking up for.

1. Witness a Stunning Winter Sunrise

Winter sunrises in Cuyuna Lakes are unlike any other. As the sky turns shades of pink, orange, and gold, the frozen lakes and untouched snow reflect the colors, creating an unforgettable scene. Plus, with fewer people out in the early hours, you’ll have the best views all to yourself.

Best Sunrise Spots:

  • Pennington Overlook – Offers a panoramic view of the lakes and surrounding forests.
  • Portsmouth Mine Pit Lake – The icy water reflects the morning light beautifully.
  • Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area – A mix of open landscapes and tree-lined trails makes for a picture-perfect setting.

Local Tip: Bundle up, bring a hot drink in a thermos, and just enjoy the quiet moment—it’s one of the best ways to start the day.

2. Spot Wildlife as the Day Begins

If you’re a nature lover, early mornings are the best time to see wildlife in Cuyuna Lakes. The fresh snow makes it easy to spot tracks, and as the sun rises, animals start to stir, creating great opportunities to catch a glimpse of them in their natural habitat.

What You Might See:

  • Bald Eagles – Often perched near open water or soaring through the sky.
  • White-Tailed Deer – Look for them grazing along the edges of forests.
  • Foxes – These quiet hunters are most active at dawn and leave neat, straight-line tracks in the snow.

Local Tip: Walk softly and scan the treetops, fields, and frozen lake edges for movement—you never know what you might spot.

3. Take an Early Morning Hike or Snowshoe Adventure

If you’re up for an adventure, there’s no better time to hit the trails than in the early morning. The air is crisp, the snow is untouched, and the quietness of the morning makes for a peaceful and refreshing experience.

Best Trails for a Morning Walk or Snowshoeing:

  • Huntington Mine Lake Trail – A quiet, scenic trail that’s even more beautiful in the early light.
  • Crosby Memorial Park Trails – A shorter walk with gorgeous lake views.
  • Ripple River Trails – Perfect for spotting birds and admiring frost-covered trees.

Local Tip: Start before sunrise and hike to a lookout point just in time to see the morning sky light up over the snowy landscape.

4. Warm Up with a Cozy Breakfast

After spending time outside in the cold, a warm breakfast and hot coffee are a must. Luckily, Cuyuna Lakes has a few great spots where you can grab something delicious to fuel the rest of your day.

Best Breakfast & Coffee Spots:

  • Crosby Coffee Company – A cozy spot with fantastic coffee and fresh-baked pastries.
  • North Country Café – A local favorite serving up classic breakfast dishes.
  • The Iron Range Eatery – Hearty, delicious meals in a laid-back atmosphere.
