Pedals, Pines & Pillowtop Beds: 48 Hours in Cuyuna

Friday Evening: Check In, Chill Out

As dusk settles over the Cuyuna Range, you’ll arrive at Cuyuna Lakes Stay, where clean, modern lodging meets up-north charm. The building once stood as a roadside inn — now reimagined with sleek touches like mobile key entry, bike wash stations, and kitchenettes that quietly say, “stay a while.”

You’re not in a chain motel — you’re in a curated stay designed for riders, adventurers, and road-trippers who appreciate both crisp sheets and local soul. After checking in, grab takeout from a nearby eatery and crack open the windows to let in the scent of pine and campfire from distant cabins.

Saturday: Red Dirt and Lake Glass

7:30 AM — Fuel Up and Fit Your Helmet

Wake up with the sun — it’s the only alarm clock that doesn’t make you want to throw something. Head to North Country Café for a proper lumberjack breakfast, then suit up for a ride you’ll remember.

9:00 AM — Ride the Red Gold

The Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area isn’t just another park — it’s a reclaimed iron range turned biking nirvana. Over 50 miles of purpose-built singletrack wind through rust-hued soil and birch forests, flanked by old mining pits that shimmer like sapphire under the sun.

Whether you’re a pump-track pro or just rented your first fat tire, there’s a loop for you. Don’t forget to snap a photo at Dragons Back or coast beside Yawkey Mine Lake, where wild blueberries might just edge into your path.

1:00 PM — Lakeside Recharge

Cool off with a kayak paddle on Huntington Mine Lake — or simply sink your feet into the sand. If you packed a rod, cast into glassy waters that regularly yield bass and northern pike. The silence here is thunderous in the best way.

6:00 PM — Fireside Food & Local Flavor

Ditch the granola bars — you’ve earned a sit-down meal. Check out Iron Range Eatery or another local joint that balances comfort food with unexpected twists (think smoked meats, lake perch, and inventive local brews). Return to your suite at Cuyuna Lakes Stay and stream a movie or just crash into your pillowtop mattress. Your legs will thank you.

Sunday: Slow Mornings & Hidden Corners

8:00 AM — Coffee and Stillness

Grab a to-go cup from a Deerwood café and take a few minutes in the crisp air. Watch the town wake up slowly — joggers, dogs, and small-town conversations happening in real time.

9:00 AM — Culture and Curiosities

If you’re up for a detour before checkout, Croft Mine Historical Park offers a sobering look at the area’s iron mining past. Walk through the replicated underground mine and reflect on the legacy that shaped this modern recreation hub.

Or, take the scenic route back home and stop at roadside stands, antique shops, or unexpected murals that dot the surrounding towns.

Where Cuyuna Lakes Stay Fits In

Cuyuna Lakes Stay isn’t just where you sleep — it’s part of the experience. Each room is equipped for bike storage, wet gear drying, and cooking your own lakeside brunch if you’re so inclined. It’s a rare combination: minimalist in design but rich in purpose.

With proximity to the best trails, tranquil waters, and eateries that don’t require dress shoes, this stay works for families, solo riders, or even those escaping the city for a digital detox.

Final Thoughts

Whether you’re chasing climbs, swimming in history, or simply craving two nights of real quiet, Cuyuna delivers. And at its heart is a stay that understands what modern explorers need without getting in the way of why they came in the first place.

If you have questions about booking or how to plan your weekend around Cuyuna’s seasonal highlights, feel free to contact Cuyuna Lakes Stay — they’re locals, and they get it.
