A Local’s Guide to the Hidden Gems of Cuyuna Lakes

Cuyuna Lakes is known for its beautiful landscapes and popular outdoor spots, but there’s so much more to discover if you know where to look. Locals have a few favorite places that offer a quieter, more intimate experience of the area. Here’s a guide to some of the hidden gems in Cuyuna Lakes that are worth seeking out on your next visit.

  1. Quiet Trails and Secluded Lakes
If you’re looking to escape the crowds, head to Huntington Mine Lake Trail. This trail winds through a peaceful forest and around a small lake, making it ideal for a quiet walk or a moment to enjoy the fall colors. Another hidden spot is Alstead Mine Lake with its stunning blue-green water and serene vibe—a perfect place for a relaxing afternoon picnic or some lakeside reading.

Local Tip: Pack binoculars for a chance to spot local wildlife, like deer and birds, who enjoy these quieter areas just as much as visitors do.
  2. Unique Artisan Shops and Boutiques
In nearby Deerwood and Crosby, you’ll find local artisan shops that are perfect for unique souvenirs or gifts. Ripple River Gallery is a local favorite, showcasing everything from paintings and pottery to jewelry and textiles by local artists. Stop by Antiques & Artisans in Crosby to hunt for one-of-a-kind vintage finds, quirky keepsakes, and handmade treasures that you won’t see anywhere else.

Local Tip: Many shops feature special seasonal items and locally made goods that make for truly memorable souvenirs.
  3. Best Sunrise and Sunset Spots
For some of the best sunrise and sunset views, locals know the quiet spots that offer stunning scenery without the crowds. Start your day at Pennington Overlook in Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area, where you’ll get an incredible view of the sunrise over the trees and lakes—a perfect way to kick off a fall morning. And in the evenings, Portsmouth Mine Pit Lake is a peaceful place to watch the sunset, with vibrant colors reflected in the lake’s clear water.

Local Tip: Bring a blanket, a thermos of coffee, and a camera. These views are worth it!
  4. Hidden Eateries and Cozy Cafes
While some dining spots are well-known, locals have their own go-to places for a delicious, low-key meal. Red Raven in Crosby is a cozy, eclectic coffee shop that offers everything from freshly brewed coffee to breakfast burritos and hearty sandwiches. Another favorite is The Deerstand—a warm, welcoming bar and grill known for comfort food and a laid-back vibe.

Local Tip: Stop by during off-peak hours to enjoy these places at their most relaxed, and check out any seasonal specials on the menu!
  5. Secret Fishing Spots and Picnic Areas
Cuyuna Lakes is full of great fishing spots, but locals know where to find the peaceful, lesser-known areas that feel almost untouched. Louisa Mine Lake is a hidden gem for fishing, with calm waters and beautiful views, especially in the morning. Another quiet spot is Yawkey Mine Lake, where you can enjoy a picnic by the water, surrounded by fall colors and far from the crowds.

Local Tip: Head out early for the best experience—you’ll have the lake mostly to yourself and might even catch a spectacular sunrise.
  6. Seasonal Farmers Markets and Local Events
To get a true taste of Cuyuna Lakes, stop by a local farmers market or seasonal event. The area’s farmers markets feature fresh produce, baked goods, and handmade crafts, while small fall festivals bring the community together with pumpkin patches, craft fairs, and seasonal treats. It’s a great way to meet locals, pick up something unique, and experience the spirit of the area.

Local Tip: Get there early for the best selection, especially if you’re looking for popular seasonal items like apple cider or fresh pastries!

Exploring the hidden gems of Cuyuna Lakes is a great way to experience the area like a local. From quiet trails and artisan shops to secret fishing spots and cozy cafes, these lesser-known places make for an unforgettable trip.
