Here’s how to make the most of the vibrant fall season on foot, with the best hikes and scenic spots.

  1. Cuyuna Lakes Mountain Bike Trails
Though these trails are popular for mountain biking, they offer something just as special for those exploring on foot. Winding through forests bursting with fall color, the trails provide a peaceful and visually captivating experience. From leisurely walks to more challenging hikes, there’s a route for everyone. And in the fall, fewer crowds mean you can enjoy a quiet, nature-filled hike almost entirely to yourself.
  2. Portsmouth Mine Pit Lake
Portsmouth Mine Pit Lake is known for its clear blue waters, which only become more striking when surrounded by the warm hues of autumn. Walking along the shoreline is a peaceful way to enjoy the tranquility of fall while catching glimpses of the vibrant reflection of trees in the lake. This is a great spot to relax, take in the crisp air, and immerse yourself in nature’s colorful display.
  3. Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area
One of the most beloved outdoor areas in Cuyuna Lakes, this state recreation area offers some of the most expansive views of the surrounding landscape. In the fall, it’s a paradise for photographers and leaf peepers. With miles of trails, you can find the perfect hike suited to your pace, whether it’s a short walk with the family or a longer, more adventurous trek through forests and around lakes. The lookouts here are truly breathtaking, with panoramic views of the colorful canopies reflecting on the serene water.
  4. Huntington Mine Lake Trail
If you’re looking for a quieter, more serene hiking experience, head to Huntington Mine Lake Trail. Tucked away from the more popular spots, this trail provides a peaceful retreat into nature. The calmness of the lake combined with the vivid autumn colors makes it feel like you’re in your own private paradise. It’s perfect for a leisurely walk, allowing you to truly disconnect from the bustle and enjoy the sounds of nature.
  5. Scenic Overlooks
Don’t have time for a full hike but still want to take in the fall beauty? Cuyuna Lakes has several scenic overlooks where you can pull over and enjoy incredible views. These lookouts offer perfect vantage points to take in the sea of colors stretching across the landscape. Bring your camera and capture the magic of fall, or simply sit back and take it all in.

Tips for Hiking in Fall

  • Dress in Layers: The weather can change quickly in the fall, especially in Minnesota. Mornings can be chilly, but you might warm up once you start moving, so wearing layers you can shed or add as needed is ideal.
  • Stay Hydrated: It may be cooler, but it’s still important to stay hydrated, especially if you’re hiking longer distances.
  • Bring a Camera or Smartphone: The colors are too good to pass up! Make sure you have your camera ready to capture the stunning fall foliage along your hike.
  • Plan for Shorter Days: With the days getting shorter, be sure to plan your hikes to allow plenty of daylight. Aim to wrap up your outdoor activities before the sun sets.

Post-Hike Fun

After a full day of exploring the trails, treat yourself to some well-earned relaxation. Head into the nearby towns of Deerwood or Crosby for a warm drink or some local food. Many of the local coffee shops and diners offer cozy atmospheres perfect for unwinding after a day in the crisp autumn air. If you’re lucky, you might stumble upon a fall market or festival, where you can pick up local produce, fall treats, or handmade crafts.

Conclusion

Fall in Cuyuna Lakes offers some of the best hiking experiences in the region, with a kaleidoscope of colors and peaceful trails waiting to be explored. Whether you prefer a full day of adventure or a leisurely walk in nature, the combination of crisp air and stunning scenery makes for an unforgettable experience.
