You don’t need to travel far to enjoy a winter getaway. Cuyuna Lakes is the perfect place to take a break, recharge, and embrace the beauty of the season—without the hassle of airports or long drives. Whether you’re craving outdoor adventure or just want to cozy up indoors, here’s why a Cuyuna Lakes staycation is exactly what you need this winter.

1. A Winter Wonderland, Right at Home

Winter in Cuyuna Lakes feels like stepping into a snow globe. The frozen lakes, frost-covered trees, and peaceful trails make it a completely different experience from the warmer months. Even if you’ve been here before, winter gives the area a fresh, quiet beauty that’s worth rediscovering.

Ways to Enjoy the Winter Scenery:

  • Take an early morning walk along the Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area trails and watch the sunrise over the snow.
  • Find a peaceful spot by a frozen lake, breathe in the crisp air, and enjoy the stillness.
  • Bring your camera—winter light and untouched snow make for some of the most breathtaking photos.

Local Tip: Mornings are extra magical. If you’re up for it, catch a sunrise when the snow glows in soft pink and golden hues.

2. Outdoor Adventures Without the Crowds

One of the best parts of a winter staycation is that you get to enjoy Cuyuna Lakes without the usual summer crowds. Whether you want to stay active or just soak in the quiet, there are plenty of ways to embrace the season.

Must-Try Winter Activities:

  • Snowshoeing & Hiking – Explore Huntington Mine Lake or Alstead Mine Lake for peaceful, scenic trails.
  • Fat Tire Biking – The famous Cuyuna bike trails don’t close in winter! Rent a fat tire bike and cruise through the snow.
  • Ice Fishing – Set up on Louisa Mine Lake or Portsmouth Mine Pit Lake for a relaxing day on the ice.

Local Tip: If you’ve never tried fat tire biking in the snow, it’s easier than you think! Rent a bike for the day and give it a go—it’s a blast.

3. Cozy Up & Enjoy the Slow Pace

A staycation isn’t just about getting outside—it’s also about slowing down and enjoying the cozy side of winter.

Simple Ways to Relax:

  • Curl up by a fireplace with a hot drink and a good book.
  • Have a game night with family or friends—bring out the board games, grab some blankets, and make a night of it.
  • Watch the snowfall from a warm cabin or lodge and let yourself truly unwind.

Local Tip: Make your stay extra special by picking up locally made treats and fresh-roasted coffee from Crosby Coffee Company.

4. Enjoy Local Dining Without the Rush

A winter staycation is the perfect time to slow down and enjoy local spots without the summer crowds. Whether you’re grabbing a coffee before hitting the trails or sitting down for a hearty meal after a long day outside, there’s no shortage of cozy places to check out.

Where to Eat & Warm Up:

  • Crosby Coffee Company – A must-stop for fresh coffee and pastries.
  • North Country Café – A laid-back breakfast spot with all the classics.
  • Iron Range Eatery – Perfect for a cozy dinner with delicious comfort food.
