Winter in Cuyuna Lakes isn’t just about the stunning snowy landscapes—it’s also the perfect time to spot wildlife. With leaves off the trees and fresh snow covering the ground, it’s easier than ever to see animals in their natural habitat. Whether you’re exploring on foot, snowshoeing, or just taking in the scenery, here’s a look at some of the amazing wildlife you can find in Cuyuna Lakes this season.
1. Spot Bald Eagles Soaring Overhead
One of the most breathtaking sights in Cuyuna Lakes is the bald eagle. These powerful birds of prey stick around all year, and in the winter, they’re often seen perched in tall trees or gliding over the lakes searching for food.
Where to Look:
Pro Tip: Bring binoculars! Early morning is the best time to catch them in action.
2. Look for White-Tailed Deer
With their thick winter coats, white-tailed deer are easy to spot against the snow. They often travel in small herds, leaving clear tracks in the powdery ground. Follow their paths through the forest, and you may get lucky enough to see them grazing or resting.
Where to Look:
Pro Tip: Walk quietly and keep an eye out for fresh tracks—they might lead you straight to a herd!
3. Catch a Glimpse of Playful Otters
Otters are among the most entertaining animals to watch in winter. They can often be seen sliding across the ice or diving into open water for fish. Their playful antics make them a favorite sight for visitors.
Where to Look:
Pro Tip: Look for movement near the water’s edge, especially on milder winter days when otters are more active.
4. Watch for Red Foxes in the Snow
Red foxes are one of the most beautiful winter sights in Cuyuna Lakes. Their thick, bushy tails and reddish coats contrast against the snow, making them easier to spot in the winter than any other time of year. These clever hunters are most active at dawn and dusk.
Where to Look:
Pro Tip: If you’re lucky, you might see a fox leap into the snow while hunting for small rodents—a classic winter survival trick!
5. Listen for Woodpeckers and Winter Birds
Winter may be quiet, but the forests are still alive with bird activity. Woodpeckers, chickadees, and nuthatches stick around all season, adding life and sound to the frozen landscape.
Where to Look:
Pro Tip: Want a closer look? Bring a handful of sunflower seeds—chickadees are known for their boldness and may even land nearby!
Even if you don’t see animals in person, you can still track them by their prints in the snow. Here’s what to look for:
🐾 Deer: Large, split hoof prints in a wandering pattern.
🐾 Foxes: Small, neat prints in a straight line.
🐾 Rabbits: Groups of four prints, with larger hind feet ahead of smaller front feet.
🐾 Otters: Slide marks alongside paw prints near water.
Winter makes it easier to see and track animals, and the peaceful landscape of Cuyuna Lakes is the perfect place to do it. Whether you’re spotting a bald eagle soaring overhead, watching an otter slide across the ice, or following fox tracks through the snow, there’s always something incredible to see.
